Jeff Clement

23 February 2009

When Jack Zdurenciek was hired I had my doubts. But his scouting background did impress me. And now that I've seen how he goes about his business and the way he presents himself, it shows me this guy has it more right than Bill Bavasi ever did. This guy is smart. Yeah the moves made this year don't instill much confidence -- at first at least. I mean, it looks like some decent young talent and some spare pieces glancing.

Seattle was only down two, and managed to keep it that way until the eighth, when Bryan LaHair and Jeff Clement both doubled, and Ichiro drove in Miguel Cairo (running for Clement). Raul Ibanez couldn't keep it going, but it was enough to stretch the game into extra innings.

The AP is reporting the obvious, that Jose Vidro will lose time to the recently promoted Bryan LaHair at the DH spot, making me wonder (for the eleventy-millionth time) why he’s using up a roster spot at all. A backup DH? That’s about as useful as a left-handed monkey wrench, and about as valuable, too.

g much in the clubhouse, either.

Seattle doesn't have too many great options at first sack--using Jeff Clement there removes him from his more valuable position behind the plate, while Kenji Johjima (recently signed to a three-year extension) doesn't produce enough offensively at first. Ditto Vidro or Cairo, other guys Riggleman might choose to put there. They could always try for a trade to bring in a big bopper, or just try out some of their minor league talent. But they're indubitably better off.

Don’t look now, but the Mariners have suddenly won two series in a row, sparked by Jeff Clement’s two-dinger performance last night. They’ve got a huge hike just to get back to respectability and avoid the specter of being the first team with a $100M+ payroll to lose 100 games—hey, I’d take $1M to lose a game, wouldn’t you? —but the signs are there. Some of them, anyway.

I'm going to deliberately provoke the ire of my easily ire-provokable friend/reader Drano by using horse racing once again as a blog segue (blogue? Have I created a word here?) For those who aren't privy to our emails--which is anyone outside of the NSA, I suppose--Drano doesn't like that I've mentioned a failed Triple Crown in horse racing while utterly failing to mention the victory of his team in the exciting Stanley Cup that happened a few weeks back. His team . . . the Stanley Cup . . . darned if I can't remember the name of his team or the sport he follows so avidly . . . but anyway, on to horse racing and baseball . . .

Let someone else feel the breeze from Sexson’s mighty strikeout swipes at the ball. Jeff Clement was called up again, after scorching AAA after his return, and he’s been taking throws at first. He’ll certainly do some DHing, and will spell Kenji Johjima behind the dish during the Ms upcoming NL swing, but even a converted catcher has more of a future than The Big Not-So-Sexy.

The University of Southern California catcher, and Golden Spikes Award finalist, Jeff Clement is selected by the Mariners with the No. 3 overall pick in the draft. In college, Clement made a name for himself as a slugger who could hit for average as well; he finished second all time at USC in homers with 46, just behind Mark McGwire, and he hold the national record for most career homers by a high schooler with 70.

His veteran clubhouse presence would help young guys like Wladimir Balentien, Jeff Clement, Yuniesky Betancourt, possibly counteracting the lack of presence by vets like Sexson and Beltre. Seems a perfect veteran-buddy match for Raul Ibanez.

g the most of his first year in the bigs by making like Vladimir Guererro; and they just brought up Jeff Clement (who's really a catcher) to push Vidro out of the DH spot, and backup a solid Kenji Johjima, whose contract was recently extended. King Felix will be dominant on the mound, and now that J.J. Putz is healthy, he should be the shutdown guy he was last year.
